CBS Logo Anniversary: The Eye Through The Years (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Happy Anniversary!

CBS will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its famous Eye logo on Thursday. The network debuted the Eye on October 20, 1951 during station breaks. While CBS has altered the color and size of the logo throughout the years, the Eye has remained basically unchanged.

According to the original 1951 press release announcing the new logo, then "CBS-TV stars" like Frank Sinatra, Jack Benny and George Burns took part in the weekend long campaign the network dedicated to its release. The eye was designed by William Golden, who was the Creative Director of CBS-TV's Advertising and Sales Promotion Department. Golden was driving through Pennsylvania Dutch Country and drew inspiration for the logo from the hex symbol Shakers placed on their barns to ward off evil spirits.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, CBS plans to commemorate the anniversary in a few ways on Thursday which include replacing the current logos on CBS.com and CBSNews.com with the original Eye logo.

To celebrate the 50th year anniversary of the CBS Eye logo, Charles Osgood reported on the history of the logo in the video below.

While CBS used many interpretations of the Eye logo throughout the years, the slideshow below includes one logo from each decade since it premiered in 1951.
