Beyoncé Brought The Mothers Of The BLM Movement To The VMAs

When Beyoncé walked down the red carpet at the MTV VMAs on Sunday, she did so with the mothers of four men whose deaths sparked and led to the development of the Black Lives Matter movement: Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Oscar Grant.

Beyoncé featured the mothers in videos from “Lemonade,” which was nominated for 11 VMAs. On Sunday, she brought all four of them, Gwen Carr (mother of Garner), Lesley McSpadden (mother of Brown), Wanda Johnson (mother of Grant) and Sybrina Fulton (mother of Martin) ― known together as the “Mothers of the Movement” ― to Madison Square Garden in New York City. Queen Bey also brought her daughter, Blue Ivy, Quvenzhané Wallis and Winnie Harlow.

The superstar has repeatedly spoken out against police killings and gun violence. In July, she changed the choreography of her Formation World Tour to include a “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” movement to further put the spotlight on social injustice, according to BET.
